The Biharwe Eclipse Monument.

Mbarara ->Uganda

Description

The structure was erected at Biharwe hill in commemoration of an eclipse that is said to have taken place in 1520 AD. It’s the only scientifically dated event in the early history of the great lakes region and was acknowledged by the legends of Bunyoro, Nkole and Buganda kingdom.

The monument has three pillars representing the then kings Ntare 1Nyabugarobwera of Nkole, Nakibinge of Buganda and Olimi 1 Rwitamahanga of Bunyoro the 5th king of the Babito dynasty and the most martial ruler of Bunyoro in the 16th century.

The King of Bunyoro was so strong military ways and often times evaded his neighboring kingdoms to loot cattle, food, slaves, women servants and other items as he desired. He had so much raided Nkole that they did not have much cattle for him to loot and he stretched out to Rwanda to get cattle and the incident happened on his return journey from Mpororo and Rwanda, the sudden darkening of time caused a lot of fear and superstitions, forcing the king and his warriors to flee in disarray, leaving behind everything to save their own lives. This marked the end of his rides and the people of Nkole were able own cattle again.
